Han
River Cruise
Meandering through the middle
of the city, the Hangang River is important to
Seoulites both as a cultural symbol and a source
of commercial wealth. Possessing a total length
of 7,256 kilometers with its origin in Gangwon-do
Province, it runs through Chungcheongbuk-do Province,
Gyeonggi-do Province, Seoul, and Incheon before
flowing into the Yellow Sea.
The Hangang River divides Seoul into two halves,
Gangbuk and Gangnam. The river played a key role
in the rapid industrialization of Seoul, once
called 'the Miracle of the Hangang River.' Along
both banks of the Hangang River, sewage treatment
works and drainage tunnels were constructed and
some city highways, including the Olympic Highway
extending over 40 kilometers from the Haengjudaegyo
Bridge to Misari area, run across Seoul from east
to west.
Thirteen citizen's parks - a total of 6,000,000
square meters - contain natural education grounds
and a full range of sport facilities, including
fishing places, water skiing and wind surfing
facilities, yacht moorages, etc. In addition,
modern pleasure ferries, some of which have several
different double-decker designs, travel the river
between four piers. All the leisure facilities
are easy to access, allowing citizens to enjoy
outdoor sports all year round.
Riverside Parks, various types of physical training
facilities are available, including soccer fields,
jogging tracks, roller skating lanes, bicycle
roads, outdoor swimming pools and other game areas.
Each park also has a spacious grassland for festive
events for all seasons such as kite-flying.

Bongensa
Temple
Originally called Gyeonseongsa Temple, construction
was begun by the great Buddhist monk, Yeonhoeguksa,
in the 10th year of King Wonseong during the Silla
Dynasty (AD 794). Originally standing east of Seonrung,
King Seonjong's tomb, it was renamed Bongeunsa Temple
in 1498 when it was expanded as part of construction
on the royal tomb. King Myeongjong designated it
the principal temple of King Seonjong and named
the monk Bou, to be in charge of promoting the temple
as a center of the Buddhist renaissance. A particular
attraction of Bongeunsa Temple is a unique wooden
structure called Seonbuldang. Upon the structure
is a plate affixed with an inscription by Kim Jeonghee
one of the greatest calligraphers in Korean history.
In addition, the first edition of the Hwaeomgyeong
Buddhist Scripture of Daebanggwangbul, which is
comprised of a total of 3,175 separate tablets,
is also kept in this temple.
