Cheonggyecheon stream

The Cheonggyecheon used to be a naturally formed stream before the Joseon Dynasty. Seoul the capital city had always been surrounded by mountains, its water was flowing into downtown. Because of the influence of the monsoon weather was likely to get flooded during rainy days in summer. On many occasions, heavy rain in summertime caused flood.

During the reign of King Sejong, the fourth king of the dynasty, to prevent floods in downtown Seoul. In 1441, an underwater column (called Supyo in Korean), marked with notches, was set up in the west side of Majeongyo (Bridge) to measure the water level in an effort against floods.

During the Joseon Dynasty period, a government office called Sumunjang was in charge of the Palace gate Security.Sumunjang,an offical at Jong 6Pum post along with Chamha,and Sumungun were responsible for inspecting passers-by and keeping public order during the opening and closing ceremonies of the City Gates.
Buckchon Hanok Village
Bukchon¡¯s historic sites and cultural heritages from the Joseon Dynasty.

Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung(Palace), Changdeokgung(Palace) and Jongmyo Royal Shrine, Bukchon is a residential area in Seoul with countless hanoks(traditional Korean houses). Bukchon is also called "the street museum in the urban core," having many historical spots and cultural heritage sites.

Since it is located in the northern part of Cheonggyecheon and Jongno, people named this area Bukchon, which means northern village. Gahoe-dong, Songhyeon-dong, Samcheong-dong.
